Full transparency: I am guilty of looking this up because I wanted to know whether or not a person I was interested in was single. It was easier and less terrifying to consult a search engine than to ask the person directly (or find out through third parties).
One might think the search query ring on middle finger woman would be coming from a person looking to purchase a ring or get some ideas of one for their middle finger.
But, it's the internet.
What's the meaning of rings on our fingers?
As someone who makes jewelry here's my take: I have no idea anymore. Each individual constructs their own meaning.
There are historical meanings for the ring finger (love, engagement), the pinky signet ring (power and authority in the literal sense) and so on.
But I'm gong to disclose some insider knowledge: People just think they're cool.
I've had many people tell me, "I always wanted a thumb ring. It's so bad*ss."
I've had others wear a ring on their middle finger because the size was slightly off from what they were looking for. After messaging back and forth, they eventually decided they'd rather keep it than have me resize it, because they liked the ring on their middle finger more than their ring finger.
The meaning of our ring finger used to carry more weight.
But in the constantly evolving culture we all live in, many of us are starting to say screw it, and go our own way.
And this is beautiful. We're deciding for ourselves what our own self-expression means.
And the best part is that in no way does this tarnish the traditional values that still hold so much value to many of us. Remember, we're choosing our own meanings these days. We can choose old ones, too.
So if you're looking for an already fleshed out meaning about a ring on a particular finger. It's out there. But if you're someone who wants to create their own meaning from scratch. You have full permission to do so.
It's also okay to do both. Wear a finger on your left or right ring finger because you're in a committed relationship. And then decide for yourself what exactly that means. Your everyday actions can reaffirm or change the meanings of the expression of wearing a ring.
So wear one on your middle finger and create an incredible story for yourself.
Or wear it on your middle finger because it looks cool, cute, bad*ss, or beautiful.
And if you're interested in getting to know someone a little better. Ask them what the ring means. What once might have been a barrier could be something you bond over.
Remember, it's okay to be friends. Let's treat each other with respect. ;)
